We call this activity “the money game” in our house. We dump out our piggy bank, then sort all the coins by type. We’ve started talking about the value of the coins and practicing counting by 5s and 10s.
We found a really great series of books to learn about skip counting (counting by multiples). Check out the counting books by Michael Dahl. Learning to count by 5s, 10s, and 25s will be key in helping your child learn how to count money.
This game is a great introduction to money concepts for kids. Once your child has the basics down, you can start talking about more advanced concepts such as the real value of money (what you can buy) and making change.
